Thrustmaster needs no special introduction: it has long become famous for its gaming peripherals from gamepads to steering wheels and other specialized devices. Licenses of famous brands, for example, Ferrari, gave them a separate recognition. Few can resist a good steering wheel, moreover, in the corporate design and the symbolism of a "galloping horse"! Especially when it comes to the Xbox One console, where several parts of the racing games of the Forza Motosport and Forza Horizon series have already been released. Meet: - a device for those who want to feel like driving a real Ferrari!

Design

As the name suggests, the Thrustmaster steering wheel is an attempt to recreate the steering wheel of a real Ferrari 458 Spider. This is indicated by literally every little thing, from the characteristic flattened shape of the "steering wheel" and ending with the controls. So, the steering wheel with a diameter of 28 cm is finished with a rubberized textured coating that imitates perforated leather. Ergonomic red grips are located on the sides, and a yellow Ferrari emblem flaunts in the middle of the steering wheel. This style cannot be confused with anything, and yet the Thrustmaster does not have a “toy” feel, unlike many wheels in a similar category.

There are 9 functional buttons on the steering wheel, including View and Menu, which are responsible for the Xbox One interface. Thanks to this, it is convenient to use the console's menus without leaving the game. The Manettino proprietary switch is in its rightful place - in real cars, it is responsible for driving modes (traction control, stabilization, etc.), and on the game steering wheel it is a two-position switch to which you can assign something useful. A dedicated Xbox Guide button brings up the main console menu, just like on Xbox One controllers, to provide quick access to the main menu and basic console functions.

Gears are switched by paddle shifters, which rotate with the steering wheel, staying always at hand. They are made of metal, so the construction is comfortable and reliable. Most games allow you to use a sequential gearbox to manually shift the paddles and win precious fractions of a second by getting to the right gear on time.

The pedal unit is quite simple: it has 2 pedals - brake and gas, the pads on which can be tilted or turned over, making the position slightly higher or lower. But horizontal adjustment is not provided, although this is true for the brake pedal. This block is made of sturdy plastic, the pedals run without excessive backlash. Curiously, the effort on the brake pedal is progressive - it increases as you press it, like the pressure in the brake system. This little thing makes the sensations more believable. By the way, the more advanced Thrustmaster pedal blocks with a clutch and multiple adjustments made of metal are also suitable for the Ferrari 458 Spider Racing. So this detail can be "upgraded" if desired.

The handlebar is attached to the table with the usual Thrustmaster clamp. This does not require any tricks: everything is extremely simple, convenient, and most importantly, any surface is suitable. The latch is tightened by hand, the entire installation or removal procedure takes 1 minute. The main thing is that the table does not ride with the virtual machine when you are actively driving!

Effort and sensitivity

The Thrustmaster Ferrari 458 Spider Racing is a junior model, so there are no clever feedback systems with electric motors. Instead, the steering force is generated by the patented Bungee Cord system, essentially rubber rods that return the steering wheel to zero position. An extremely simple solution, which, nevertheless, provides a linear increase in effort when turning the steering wheel. If you like entertaining arcade races, then such a solution is more than adequate, because most often the feedback there operates on the same principle. If you are counting on a vivid and detailed feeling in simulators, including a real "feeling of the road", then in this case you need to look at the higher models with force feedback.

The total steering angle is 240 degrees. That is, the steering wheel turns in each direction a little more than a quarter of a turn. This solution is again well suited for beginners: the taxiing will be more gentle, without difficult interceptions. In addition, many games are initially designed for rudders with a steering angle of 180 degrees. Unassuming but versatile option. Of course, Thrustmaster has models with a rotation angle of up to 1080 degrees, but their cost is 2-3 times higher - this is the lot of true enthusiasts, and our Ferrari 458 Spider is more suitable for entertaining rides without the hassle of racks, chairs and other e-sports equipment.

The steering sensitivity is high by default, so beginners will have to get used to steering gently rather than swinging the steering wheel. Although there is a simpler option: the sensitivity of the Ferrari 458 Spider is adjustable in four steps - from maximum (default) to minimum. To do this, you need to hold down the key combination and wait for the LED indication, which will show the selected sensitivity level. Of course, novice virtual riders can reduce the steering sensitivity by 1-2 levels to get used to new sensations for themselves, and then gradually increase as the results improve. An important detail: the selected sensitivity is retained until the steering wheel is turned off, so it must be adjusted when it is turned on again. Certain games, such as Forza Motorsport 5, recommend using the 3rd (very low) or 4th (minimum) sensitivity level for optimal control.

I was afraid that after the 900-degree rudder here, this rudder would be too sharp and sensitive. Cons: For me, the fact that there is even no vibration feedback, not to mention the feedback, remains unclear. Even the cheapest steering wheels have a vibration motor, but there is NOTHING, and for that kind of money. It turns out that we pay only a third of the cost for licenses. The second and more important disadvantage for me is the appeared backlash of the steering wheel during a week of operation (adequate!) for 2 hours a day. Since this is my first steering wheel, I don’t know, maybe this is normal. When buying, there was no backlash, the steering wheel turned only left and right, and now up and down )) although very insignificantly (you don't notice during the race), but not very pleasant. Maybe this is a feature of only my steering wheel. I thought the steering wheel of the Trustmaster licensed by Ferrari and Microsoft would be more robust.
Review: In general, the steering wheel is good, I like everything, but I do not understand why they write "vibration feedback" everywhere if it is NOT, why they mislead people.
